GambleAware — Responsible Gaming

GambleAware — Responsible Gaming logo
GambleAware is the UK's leading independent charity for the prevention and treatment of gambling harm. Founded in 2002 as the Responsible Gambling Trust, it operates under a public health model that distinguishes it from other entities in the sector: it does not directly fund services, but rather commissions, evaluates, and coordinates a network of treatment providers across England, Scotland, and Wales. Historically, its funding came from voluntary donations from gambling operators, although from April 2025, the UK government introduced a mandatory levy that replaces this voluntary model.
GambleAware's work is structured around three pillars: commissioning the National Gambling Treatment Service (NGTS), public health campaigns such as the "Bet Regret" campaign, and generating research and evidence to inform policy. Through the NGTS, GambleAware funds the National Gambling Support Network (NGSN), which operates the National Gambling Helpline, receiving around 42,000 calls annually. GamCare is one of its main service providers. GambleAware has played a leading role in protecting vulnerable populations, including women, young people, and those in at-risk socioeconomic situations. In 2022, it launched the first gambling harm awareness campaign specifically targeting women in the UK, reaching 54% of its target audience. Additionally, over 5 million people visit the BeGambleAware.org portal annually for support and information. For iGaming operators, the GambleAware logo and resources are a visible regulatory compliance requirement in the UK market. Operators licensed by the UK Gambling Commission must display the BeGambleAware logo on their platforms and marketing materials, refer to its resources, and contribute to its funding. This relationship makes GambleAware an indispensable player in any compliance strategy for the British market. Although GambleAware focuses its activities on Great Britain, its independent commissioning model and public health campaigns have served as a benchmark for the design of responsible gambling policies in Latin America. Countries like Colombia and Argentina, which have made progress in regulating online gambling, study GambleAware's frameworks when building their own treatment and prevention systems. The accumulated experience of this organization represents a transferable knowledge asset for operators and regulators in emerging markets.
