Colón and its port history

Colón was founded in 1850 as an embarkation point for California gold seekers crossing the isthmus to the Pacific, and grew during Panama Canal construction as Central America's largest Atlantic port. The city has a strongly marked Afro-Caribbean cultural identity, with Jamaican, Barbadian and Trinidadian influences that arrived with Canal workers, and a Caribbean gastronomy of fried fish, patacones and rice and beans distinguishing it from the capital.
