Sala Casino Artigas

Sala Casino Artigas is the Uruguayan state slot hall in the capital of Uruguay northernmost department, with state-of-the-art slots, tournaments and snackbar. Artigas is the capital of the homonymous department, located at the extreme north of Uruguay on the border with Brazil, with the Brazilian city of Quarai on the other side of the Cuareim River. Artigas department takes its name from Uruguay national hero Jose Gervasio Artigas, the independence hero whose figure is the most venerated in the country history. The Uruguay River, born in the Serra Gaucha of Brazil and flowing into the Rio de la Plata, delimits Artigas department in its western part with the Argentine province of Corrientes.

Artigas: the deep north of Uruguay and the legacy of the National Hero

Jose Gervasio Artigas, Uruguay national hero, was born in Montevideo in 1764 and dedicated his life to fighting for the independence of the Rio de la Plata peoples. His Liga Federal project, which sought a confederation of autonomous provinces against Buenos Aires centralization, was the most advanced political proposal of its time in South America. Artigas died in exile in Paraguay in 1850 and his remains were repatriated to Uruguay in 1977. Artigas department is known for its amethyst and quartz deposits extracted and exported from the region quarries, with Uruguay being the world third largest semi-precious stones exporter. Termas del Dayman, in the neighboring Salto department, is the closest thermal tourism destination to Artigas.
