National Institute of Viticulture INAVI has its headquarters in Canelones, and Las Piedras National Vendimia Festival, held in March, is Uruguay largest wine event. Las Piedras Battle of May 18, 1811, the first great victory of Jose Gervasio Artigas in the independence struggle, was fought in fields south of the current city and is commemorated every May 18 as the day of Uruguay Army.
