History: from oligarchic palace to national heritage

The palace was inaugurated on January 29, 1921 under the name Hotel Casino Carrasco, conceived by the Balneario Carrasco society at the initiative of businessman Alfredo Arocena. The architectural project was commissioned to Franco-Swiss architects Gastón Mallet and Jacques Dunant, with the collaboration of Uruguayan Félix Elena. Construction was interrupted for nine years by the First World War before completion, resulting in a historicist eclectic palace with strong neoclassical and French baroque influence.

The building's architecture features characteristic Haussmann-period mansards, monumental marble staircases, double-height halls decorated with plasterwork and stained glass evoking the Parisian Belle Époque. During its heyday, the hotel was the meeting point of Montevideo's aristocracy and welcomed figures such as Albert Einstein in 1925 and poet Federico García Lorca in 1934. In 1975 the building was declared a National Historic Heritage site.

The 2013 restoration and reopening

After decades of glory and a period of deterioration and closure in the nineties, restoration works began in 2009 by Carrasco Nobile SA. On March 7, 2013 the complex reopened as Sofitel Montevideo Casino Carrasco and Spa, with hotel management by Sofitel chain and the casino run by operator Codere. The restoration returned the building to its original splendor while preserving heritage elements and adding contemporary luxury amenities.
