Argentina: Federal Police dismantle an online casino in Santa Fe
The Argentine Federal Police carried out two raids this week in the town of San Vicente, Castellanos department, in central Santa Fe, as part of an illegal gambling investigation. The procedures resulted in the identification of two men and two women who acted as cashiers for an clandestine online casino and operated as a bridge between bettors and unauthorized platforms.
The investigation began at the beginning of the year, after the Caja de Asistencia Social de la Lotería de Santa Fe received three complaints between January 19 and 20. The case was handled by the Public Prosecutor's Office and was led by prosecutor Carlos Vottero, with the support of the Federal Investigations Department of the Federal Police. The case reflects the model of cooperation between provincial regulators and federal forces to pursue illegal gambling.
Investigators found that the suspects attracted players with eye-catching promotions on social media and instant messaging groups. Many of these channels are frequented by teenagers, a variable that the prosecutor's office highlighted due to the ease with which the operation circumvented age controls. The scheme combined bank transfers, virtual chip sales, and credit loading for unlicensed sites, all steps that generated a high volume of operations and commissions for the cashiers.
The raids were carried out at two addresses on Urquiza and Entre Ríos streets in San Vicente. At the scene, officers seized 24 cell phones linked to the operations, two notebooks, a tablet, five pen drives, a .28 caliber firearm, as well as notebooks and documentation that provide evidence of the scheme's magnitude. The number of devices confirms the professional nature of the network, with multiple accounts and simultaneous channels to manage player traffic.
The operation highlights a concern that spans across Latin America. The growth of illegal online gambling supported by social media and messaging is no longer limited to a few operators, but rather forms a distributed infrastructure that combines foreign brands, local intermediaries, and digital tools. Argentina, Brazil, and Chile are building similar strategies to pursue this chain, with prosecutors and specialized units beginning to coordinate actions with gambling regulators and state lotteries.
