Betsson & Betano lead 33% of pro league wearing gaming brands
With the start of the Apertura Tournament, a survey by Yogonet confirms that 10 of the 30 First Division teams have a betting operator as their main sponsor. The "Superclásico" Boca-River has become a marketing battle between European giants.
The opening whistle of the Apertura Tournament of the Professional Football League last January 22 not only set the ball rolling but also showcased the new commercial ecosystem of Argentina's most popular sport. A market analysis reveals that 33% of the clubs in the top division (10 out of 30 teams) have ceded the main space on their jersey to gambling and sports betting operators.
This phenomenon responds to the urgent need of clubs to access dollarized or inflation-adjusted contracts amid Argentina’s volatile economy. While traditional sectors withdraw, iGaming injects immediate liquidity. The fight for visibility is fierce, especially among international brands that see Argentine football as an inexpensive and effective showcase to project themselves throughout Latin America.
Clash of Titans: Betano and Betsson Take Over the "Big Five"
The strategy of global brands has been aggressive and selective, targeting clubs with the largest membership base and TV ratings. River Plate sports Betano (Kaizen Gaming) on its chest, while its eternal rival, Boca Juniors, maintains its strategic alliance with the Swedish Betsson.
This commercial polarization in the "Superclásico" is mirrored in other big clubs. Racing Club shares a sponsor with Boca, consolidating Betsson as one of the strongest investors in the country. On the other hand, the report highlights an interesting move in Independiente and Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata, now sponsored by SportsBet, a brand seeking to gain market share in the province of Buenos Aires.
The Interior Stronghold: City Center and Provincial Lotteries Resist the International Advance
While multinationals dominate Buenos Aires (AMBA), the interior of the country shows a different reality, dominated by local operators with strong territorial roots. The city of Rosario is exclusive territory of City Center Online, which sponsors the city’s two archrivals: Rosario Central and Newell's Old Boys, ensuring total presence in one of the continent’s most passionate derbies.
Argentine gaming federalism is also reflected on the jerseys. Unión de Santa Fe maintains support from the Santa Fe Lottery, and Instituto de Córdoba does the same with the Córdoba Lottery. A particular case is Atlético Tucumán, sponsored by Casino Parque (a physical operator in San Miguel de Tucumán), demonstrating that the land-based channel still sees value in the massive exposure football provides, despite the digital boom.
Fintech vs. Betting: The Fight for the Remaining 43% of the Market
Although online gambling is growing by leaps and bounds, the financial sector remains the king of sponsorship volume. According to data from the specialized site Marca de Gol, banks, virtual wallets, and fintechs occupy 43% of total sponsorships in the league.
However, the trend suggests a qualitative shift: while fintechs usually occupy sleeves, backs, or shorts (secondary assets), betting houses are buying the "premium asset" (the front of the jersey). This indicates that, although more financial companies are investing, the amount of money per contract contributed by betting companies is, in many cases, higher and more decisive for the clubs’ treasury.
