Buenos Aires casino overhaul as online gaming reshapes business
The map of in-person gaming in the province of Buenos Aires is preparing for a stage of profound changes. The president of the Provincial Institute of Lotteries and Casinos of Buenos Aires, Gonzalo Atanasof, confirmed that the organization is promoting a modernization plan that includes investments close to US$27 million aimed at updating seven casino halls distributed across different points of the Buenos Aires territory.
The works, which are in the final phase of administrative processes, will primarily benefit emblematic complexes of the Atlantic Coast and the provincial interior. Among them stand out the casinos of Mar del Plata, Tandil, and Miramar, where infrastructure renewal, modernization of control systems, and updating of the machine park are planned. The organization maintains that the economic impact of these investments will be significant for local economies, both due to the construction activity and the subsequent reactivation of tourism and service activities.
The challenge of in-person gaming in the face of digital advancement
Beyond the investment announcements, Atanasof acknowledged that the sector is undergoing a structural transformation marked by the sustained growth of online gaming. As he explained, much of the betting experience has moved to the digital environment, a change that directly affects casinos, bingo halls, racetracks, and traditional lottery agencies.
The head of IPLyC emphasized that this phenomenon poses an additional challenge in labor terms, since a significant portion of employment in the sector is linked to in-person gaming. In this context, he stated that it is key to rethink the role of physical halls and adapt them to new consumption dynamics without losing their economic and social function.
Casinos as spaces for comprehensive entertainment
As a response to this scenario, the provincial organization promotes a multimodal casino model, aligned with international trends. The idea is to move towards spaces that operate permanently, integrating shows, gastronomy, and leisure proposals that go beyond the traditional gaming offer.
Within this updating process, the incorporation of electronic payment methods in Buenos Aires halls is also being analyzed. Currently, in-person bets are made only in cash, a limitation that, according to Atanasof, does not fit current consumption habits, especially among younger audiences. The payment system via QR codes is in the testing phase together with the provincial bank and could begin to be implemented in the coming months, with benefits both in user convenience and in the security and traceability of operations.
A season with mixed signals
Regarding the recent performance of casinos, Atanasof described a cautious context. Although public circulation is observed in the main tourist destinations, the level of consumption shows a contraction in line with the general economic situation. This trend is also reflected in the activity of gaming halls, which face a more moderate summer season compared to previous years.
With investments underway and a market in full digital transformation, the province of Buenos Aires aims to reposition its casinos as part of a broader entertainment offer, while seeking to sustain in-person activity in an increasingly competitive scenario.
