Demanding transparency regarding Casino Club's online concession
In the Argentine province of La Pampa, a debate has begun to take shape regarding transparency in the regulated online gambling market. The political group Avanzar Juntos demanded that the provincial government and the Directorate of Financial Aid for Social Action make public the current concession contract with Casino Club, as well as reports on the operation of the online sports betting platform. The request was driven by Julián Angelucci, who questioned the authorities' refusal to provide the documentation, arguing that its disclosure could affect the commercial interests of the concessionaire company.
The leader stated that the business has completely changed, as for 20 years the casino was over 100 kilometers from General Pico, and today it is available on users' phones, with a volume that moves billions of pesos annually and with influencers promoting the operator's online sports betting on the city streets. According to official data from the provincial directorate cited by Angelucci, during April, residents of La Pampa wagered close to 4.2 billion pesos, approximately 2.8 million dollars, on Casino Club's online platform. If sustained, this level would bring the annual volume close to 50 billion pesos, approximately 33.4 million dollars.
Angelucci argued that, as it is a concession granted by the State, information on the business's operation should be publicly accessible. He requested not only to know the volume of bets and the income received by the province, but also the profitability of the operation, the auditing mechanisms, and measures to prevent problem gambling. The leader maintained that the discussion goes beyond the economic sphere and focused on the social impact of the growth of online gambling, citing a report from the Provincial Drug Observatory which states that 20 percent of high school students in La Pampa had gambled money online at least once in the last year.
The representative emphasized that this is a business conceded by the State that generates public revenue with a direct impact on health, education, housing, and resource distribution among municipalities. He argued that it is not enough to collect revenue; it is also necessary to protect those who play on the other side of the screen. Following the provincial directorate's refusal to provide the documentation, he filed a complaint with the Administrative Investigations Prosecutor's Office to order access to the concession contract and reports related to the operation of online sports betting.
