Entre Ríos Senate: Restrict online gambling on public Wi-Fi
The Senate of the province of Entre Ríos has called for a new working session in committee for this Tuesday, May 12, to deepen the debate on the regulation of digital gaming activity in the region. On this occasion, the parliamentary focus will be on a specific initiative that seeks to limit access to gaming platforms through the use of state technological infrastructure. The joint meeting of the Public Health and Drug Addiction, and General Legislation Commissions will take place at the Government House, marking a firm step in the provincial legislative agenda for this year.
The central axis of the discussion will be File N° 15.399, a bill that proposes to explicitly prohibit access to online betting sites when users use public internet access networks provided by state agencies. This measure is perceived as an effort by legislators to establish access barriers in public spaces, thus reinforcing prevention and public health policies that seek to mitigate the risks associated with compulsive gambling. To enrich the technical analysis of the project, Carlos A. Moyano, president of the Institute of Financial Aid for Social Action (IAFAS), has been invited to provide the provincial regulatory body's vision on the viability and impact of this restriction.
In addition to the participation of IAFAS, the meeting will be attended by Emanuel Gainza, Secretary of Modernization, Science, Technology and Innovation of Entre Ríos. His intervention will be key to determining the technical scope of blocking on public networks and how the provincial infrastructure will be coordinated to comply with the regulations if approved. The presence of both officials underlines the provincial Executive's interest in addressing the problem of online betting from a multidisciplinary perspective that combines gambling control with technological innovation.
This progress in the Senate occurs in a context where the Chamber of Deputies of Entre Ríos also maintains intense activity regarding the regulation of the sector. Currently, in the Lower House, two initiatives coexist that seek to provide a definitive legal framework for sports betting and online gambling. On the one hand, there is the proposal to create a Provincial Register of Online Bettors, while on the other, a government project is being analyzed that aims at a comprehensive regulation of the exploitation and development of digital gaming activity throughout the Entre Ríos territory.
It should be noted that the legislative path in the province has been the result of intense prior consensus work among the different blocs. Over the last year, four different projects were unified into just two main texts that are now being analyzed in the different parliamentary committees. The articulation between both chambers will be fundamental for Entre Ríos to finally achieve modern legislation that balances the development of the entertainment industry with the protection of users and public health, especially regarding the use of public resources for betting activities.
