Mendoza seeks to curb youth debt from gambling
Deputy Germán Gómez presented a bill in the Mendoza Legislature addressing an increasingly frequent intersection: online betting, virtual wallets, and youth indebtedness. The initiative proposes creating a Provincial Program for Education on Digital Credit and Prevention of Youth Over-indebtedness in high schools, to provide students in public and private institutions with tools that allow them to understand and make decisions regarding credit and financing offers that arrive via wallets, applications, installment purchases, and other digital platforms.
Among its contents, the program specifically contemplates addressing the risks of financing online betting and gambling and its link to indebtedness and problematic gambling behaviors. For Gómez, this is a growing and concerning phenomenon: he stated that many young people manage virtual wallets, pay in installments, and receive credit and betting offers on the same screen before finishing high school, and that they reach 18 years of age without the tools to understand what they are signing, in a context where financial technology has advanced much faster than financial education.
The legislator supported his argument with a report from the Argentine Red Cross which, based on a survey of 11,000 young people between 13 and 18 years old, found that 16 percent had gambled at some point and that one in eight of them ended up in debt, with a piece of data that, in his opinion, closes the circle: 83 percent of those who gamble do so from a virtual wallet. Gómez pointed to a fundamental inequality, noting that platforms analyze users in seconds and set how much to lend them and at what rate, while on the other side, young people do not know how to read a total financial cost or distinguish a convenient installment from a trap, and maintained that the solution is educational and that prevention is always cheaper than remediation.
The project joins a series of initiatives in different Argentine provinces that seek to address the relationship between online betting, digital credit, and young people, an issue that has gained space on the legislative agenda as the use of virtual wallets among adolescents and early exposure to advertising and online gambling offers have grown.
