Misiones approves law to protect minors from gambling
The Argentine province of Misiones has advanced its child protection agenda by approving a comprehensive law aimed at strengthening defenses against exposure to online gambling and risks in digital environments. The Misiones House of Representatives approved the regulation, which establishes a comprehensive framework for prevention, awareness, and control specifically designed to safeguard children and adolescents.
The law introduces several layers of protection: first, active prevention through educational programs in schools and communities about the risks of online gambling. Second, restrictions on advertising related to online gambling, limiting minors' exposure to promotional material in media and digital platforms. Third, it establishes control mechanisms and educational actions aimed at operators, parents, and educators on how to identify and respond to risky behaviors in minors.
Additionally, the law provides for concrete sanctions for platforms that fail to comply with the provisions, including fines, service restrictions, and blocking. This coercive component is critical: without consequences, restrictions are dead letters. Misiones recognizes that operators respond to economic incentives, and only credible penalties generate behavioral changes.
The provincial context is relevant. Misiones has historically been a benchmark for responsible gambling in Argentina, with initiatives aimed at minors before it became a national priority. This new law consolidates that trajectory but also recognizes the evolution of risk: five years ago, the problem was physical casinos and slot machines in illegal venues. Today, the main risk is access to online gambling platforms from any internet-connected device, without effective parental control.
