Misiones: Pathological Gambling Course for Older Adults
The Gerontology Directorate of the Ministry of Public Health of Misiones, in conjunction with the Provincial Lottery and Casino Institute (IPLyC), announced the launch of the course “Well-being in the Elderly: prevention and management of pathological gambling.”
This training, which will be offered online during the months of September, October, and November 2025, is specially aimed at professionals and health workers dedicated to the care and support of elderly people in the province.
The course will feature the distinguished participation of Julio A. Brizuela, a recognized specialist in the field, founding member and first president of the Chapter of Pathological Gambling and other Behavioral Addictions of the Argentine Psychiatric Association (APSA), as well as co-author of the Responsible Gambling Manual (2007). His experience will provide a comprehensive and updated perspective on the challenges faced by the elderly regarding pathological gambling.
According to the Ministry of Health, the program will address various fundamental thematic axes: the impact of gambling and entertainment dynamics on older adults; the psychological, biological, and social factors affecting the elderly population; the risks associated with the use of technologies and online gambling; as well as strategies for prevention, early detection, and interdisciplinary management of the issue.
The training will be structured in three consecutive modules, which will be conducted virtually through the Cisco Webex Meeting platform on the following dates: Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Wednesday, October 8, 2025, and Wednesday, November 12, 2025, all from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. To obtain certification, participants must attend all three sessions, allowing only one absence.
It is important to highlight that classes will not be recorded, so real-time attendance is mandatory. Those wishing to participate must register in advance through a form enabled by the organization. This initiative aims to strengthen the capacities of health professionals in the province, promoting well-being and the prevention of addictive behaviors in the elderly population, a segment increasingly exposed to the risks of pathological gambling and new technologies.
