Brazil now focuses on the design of betting platforms
Brazil is preparing to open a new front in the regulation of fixed-odds betting, this time focusing on platform design. The government is targeting the visual and interactive resources used by sportsbooks which, according to its interpretation, can push users towards excessive gambling, an area that until now had remained outside the sector's measures.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Finance, Dario Durigan, in an interview with Esfera Brasil, where he stated that the State will move to limit advertising and design models that stimulate such behaviors. For now, the ministry has not specified which concrete elements of the sites and applications would be affected, nor has it set a deadline for presenting the new rules, although the objective would be to set limits on certain stimuli and features that encourage longer permanence or frequency of play.
Durigan also emphasized that the strategy is not limited to companies operating within the legal framework, but that the government will continue to strengthen the fight against illegal platforms. In parallel, the Executive has already implemented mechanisms to prevent access for individuals considered to be in vulnerable situations, including the exclusion of approximately 3 million beneficiaries of Bolsa Família and Benefício de Prestação Continuada, to which nearly 800,000 people removed through Desenrola 2.0 and another 1.2 million who voluntarily requested their exclusion through the centralized self-exclusion platform were added.
The initiative is part of a regulatory tightening phase that the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been deploying in the sector, with advertising restrictions, access blocking mechanisms, and an increasingly critical official discourse towards online betting, even while maintaining the decision to preserve a regulated market instead of prohibiting it.
