Brazil football 2026: Fewer "bets" sponsors, more financial discipline
The visual landscape of Brazilian football has changed drastically at the start of 2026. After a 2025 where 100% of Serie A teams sported a betting company on their chest, the new season begins with notable absences. Clubs of the stature of Grêmio, Internacional, Santos, Vasco, and Coritiba have started their competitions without a master sponsorship from the betting sector, a clear sign that the market has entered a phase of adjustment.
From expansion to consolidation
Despite fans' concerns, a "burst" of the bubble is ruled out. Currently, Brazil has 82 authorized companies (operating 183 brands), a volume that the market itself recognizes as unsustainable in the long term.
What we are witnessing is a natural selection:
- Caution at the negotiation tables: Contracts that were previously signed out of inertia now face much stricter ROI (return on investment) audits.
- Capital concentration: Only the brands with the strongest financial backing maintain elite agreements. Flamengo, Corinthians, Palmeiras, and São Paulo continue with contracts exceeding R$ 100 million (approx. USD 18.8 million) per season.
The "World Cup Effect": the budget shifts to TV
A determining factor in the lack of agreements with clubs is the 2026 World Cup. Betting companies have redirected a massive portion of their marketing budgets towards broadcasting rights and advertising on mass media.
Industry giants have preferred to secure spaces on Globo, CazéTV, SBT, and N Sports to capture the global audience of the tournament, leaving less liquidity available for direct sponsorships on club jerseys.
Specific cases and reorganization
Although there were breakups due to insolvency, such as the case of Alfa.bet with the Porto Alegre clubs, most movements are strategic. For example, at Cruzeiro a substitution of brands within the same economic group was observed, aiming to optimize the positioning of one specific brand over another.
The era of "sponsorship for everyone" has ended or at least will not be so easy if costs remain. The current scenario indicates that operators will be much more selective, prioritizing profitability and massive reach during global events over constant regional presence. For clubs, this means that the value of their jersey must now compete directly with the reach of new digital and television media. Despite this effect, there are 25 new operators who have applied for licenses in Brazil, opening the door to new sponsors who must establish a presence in the country where all channels have great demand and prices at the limit of profitability.
The current investment made by each of the brands in the different football teams ranges from approximately 3 to 50 million USD annually, which, added to the cost of the license and taxes, represents a more than relevant investment, considering that this investment in football must be accompanied by media investments to support the strategy.
