Brazil launches specialized lab to detect illegal gambling platforms
In an effort to purify the digital market and ensure a safe environment for bettors, Brazil's National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) has announced the creation of a specialized laboratory for tracking online gambling operators that operate outside the law. Under the direction of Ricardo Morishita Wada, this new technical center is integrated into a national strategy that seeks not only to identify irregular pages but also to streamline blocking mechanisms and raise public awareness about the financial and social risks associated with these clandestine platforms.
The initiative, currently in its final stages of implementation, will serve as a fundamental support arm for consumer protection agencies known as Procon. The primary function of the laboratory will be to detect the presence of websites and social media profiles offering betting without state endorsement, immediately forwarding all collected information to the Prizes and Betting Secretariat of the Ministry of Finance. With this data in hand, the competent authority will be able to proceed with the blocking or definitive closure of infringing platforms much more efficiently.
Technical Surveillance and New Guidelines for Player Protection
In addition to constant monitoring, Senacon plans to soon publish a technical note that will establish a set of clear guidelines for various public entities on how to act against the phenomenon of illegality. This tool will be complemented by informative campaigns designed to help users easily differentiate between a regulated site and a fraudulent one. In this regard, Wada recalled a basic but effective verification criterion for the Brazilian market: only domains ending in ".bet.br" have legal permission to operate, while any other ending should be considered suspicious.
The secretary has been emphatic in pointing out that the dangers of interacting with unauthorized platforms go far beyond simple tax evasion. These irregular sites are often linked to personal data theft, algorithm manipulation to harm the player, and facilitating access for minors. Furthermore, investigations have detected direct links to organized crime networks, making illegal gambling a threat to the security of all Brazilian society.
Against Misinformation and the False Concept of Investment
The Secretariat has also called for caution against the mistaken perception that online betting can be a stable source of income or a form of investment. Wada warned that the concept of gambling is clear in its definition, as statistically, the probabilities of loss are always higher than those of gain. For this reason, the agency has strongly questioned the role of some influencers who promote these activities as if they were a profitable business for the user.
The launch of this laboratory represents a step forward in the fight for a transparent market, where consumer protection is the central axis of regulation. By providing Procon with advanced technological tools, Brazil seeks to close in on operators who operate in the shadows, ensuring that digital entertainment does not result in economic or social harm to the population.
