Brazil topped 1.32 billion in online gambling taxes
The regulated online gambling industry in Brazil kept up its strong contribution to public coffers during the first half of 2026. According to data published by the Receita Federal, the Government collected 7.28 billion reais, some 1.32 billion dollars, in taxes tied to sports betting and online games between January and June, an increase of 83.31 per cent against the 3.97 billion reais, some 722 million dollars, obtained in the same period of 2025. The rise represents an additional 3.31 billion reais compared with the previous year and reflects both the consolidation of the regulated market and the impact of the heavier tax burden on the sector.
In June alone, collection reached 1.39 billion reais, some 252 million dollars, against the 900 million recorded in the same month of 2025, which meant year-on-year growth of 73.12 per cent and made June the second-best month of the year, only behind January, when collection had reached 1.49 billion reais. The data were presented in the June monthly analysis by tax auditors Claudemir Malaquias, head of the Centre for Tax and Customs Studies, and Marcelo Gomide, forecasting and analysis coordinator at the Receita Federal.
As the body explained, part of the growth responds to the rise in the rate applied to gross gaming revenue, which went from 12 to 13 per cent on 26 March 2026, after Complementary Law 224/2025 came into force. The official schedule provides for further rises to 14 per cent in 2027 and 15 per cent in 2028, and the Finance Ministry estimates that this one percentage point increase will bring around 850 million additional reais to federal collection this year.
Despite much of the initial phase of the FIFA World Cup being played during June, the Receita Federal noted that the tournament did not cause extraordinary growth in betting volume. Although collection continued to recover after the falls recorded between February and March, the behaviour was consistent with the upward trend that began in April and with the effect of the higher rate, rather than with an exceptional jump driven by the competition. The report also recalled that during 2025 the total collection tied to the sector reached 9.95 billion reais, some 1.81 billion dollars, coming both from the tax on gross gaming revenue and from other business taxes, among them corporate income tax, the social contribution on net profit, PIS and Cofins.
