Brazil's national policy: eradicating match-fixing strategically
The Brazilian government has taken a fundamental step in defending transparency in sports with the holding of the 2nd National Technical Meeting for Combating Match-Fixing, which is taking place in Brasília between April 28 and 30, 2026. This meeting serves as a platform for the formal presentation of the National Policy for the Prevention and Combat of Sports Match-Fixing, officially established through Ordinance No. 1/2026. The initiative is a direct result of the coordinated work by the Interministerial Working Group created last year, which has managed to articulate actions among various federal agencies to confront fraud affecting both competitions and the betting sector.
The new national strategy is based on four pillars of action that seek to cover all stages of the problem: regulation, prevention, monitoring and inspection, and repression. The State's central objective is to integrate these areas to improve institutional response capacity, allowing not only for early detection of illicit conduct but also ensuring that sanctions are applied rigorously. In this way, Brazil seeks to consolidate an environment where legal certainty and the credibility of sports results are the foundation for the growth of the entertainment and iGaming industry.
Giovanni Rocco, National Secretary of Sports Betting and Economic Development of Sport, emphasized that this meeting consolidates a historic advance for the country by deepening the training of agents and strengthening integration among institutions. For his part, the Director-General of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues, highlighted the importance of a qualified and coordinated response, warning that match manipulation is often linked to complex criminal organizations. For Rodrigues, the combination of intelligence, regulation, and investigation will allow the State to confront these practices continuously and effectively.
The Secretary of Prizes and Betting of the Ministry of Finance, Daniele Cardoso, stated that these results demonstrate the effectiveness of the joint work initiated in 2025, succeeding in institutionalizing this agenda as a true state policy. The forum in Brasília plays a decisive role by bringing together the sports community, betting operators, control authorities, and integrity organizations in one place. Finally, the National Secretariat of Public Security assured that this policy reinforces the national security system, expanding the capacity for prevention and repression of any illicit practice that seeks to undermine the essence of Brazilian sport.
