Instant payments: key for LatAm users
A study by OKTO reveals that 29.4% of bettors would abandon a platform if a transaction takes more than 30 seconds. With increasingly spontaneous users and low tolerance for errors, instant payments and security are the pillars that define loyalty in the region.
Payment infrastructure has ceased to be a "back-office" issue to become the heart of the user experience in Latin America. According to recent research by OKTO, digital consumer expectations have drastically increased, placing speed and the availability of local methods as the determining factors when choosing a betting site.
The report highlights a structural shift in bettor behavior: 41.2% of respondents do not plan their transactions, acting completely spontaneously. This immediacy entails an extreme technical demand; so much so that nearly 30% of users would cancel a deposit or withdrawal if the process exceeds half a minute, while 17.6% require the operation to be completed in less than five seconds.
The payment method as a competitive advantage
The study presents compelling figures about the user's priority hierarchy:
- Decisive factor: For 58.8%, the available payment method is the key criterion for choosing a platform.
- Abandonment due to friction: 17.6% would not complete a bet if they do not find their preferred payment option.
- Retention at risk: In the event of a payment system failure, 35.5% of bettors state they would stop using the platform in the future.
Even traditional factors such as competitive odds or game variety (cited by 35.3%) take a back seat to the efficiency of the financial flow.
The challenge of major sporting events
The impact of a poor payment gateway becomes critical during high-demand tournaments like the World Cup. OKTO’s study reveals that "occasional engagement" dominates these periods: 58.8% of respondents do not plan to bet beforehand but do so motivated by the live development of matches. In this scenario of quick decisions, any operational friction results in immediate migration to the competition.
Edward Chandler, global CEO of OKTO, states that platforms that do not reach mobile-first efficiency levels — following the standard of solutions like Pix in Brazil — are destined to lose relevance. "The expectation for fast payments accompanies an increasingly immediate consumption pattern," the executive noted.
Conclusion: Trust is fragile
For OKTO, today’s Latin American user is defined by three traits: spontaneity, low tolerance for errors, and demand for personalization. The research concludes that a single negative experience in the payments area is enough to cause a customer’s definitive departure, forcing operators to view financial infrastructure not as a source of friction but as a strategic asset for business sustainability.
