Betting in Brazil generated a GGR of almost 1.5 billion
Sportsbooks authorized by the Brazilian Ministry of Finance recorded a gross gaming revenue of 7.6 billion reais, approximately 1.493 billion dollars, in the first quarter of the year, according to information published by the Metrópoles website. Of that total, 914 million reais, about 179.5 million dollars, were paid to the federal government in taxes by operators, during a period when the tax rate on gross revenue was 12 percent, a value that increased to 13 percent starting in April.
Gross gaming revenue is the difference between the amounts wagered by users and the money paid out in prizes. Since the beginning of the regulated market, bets have been subject to specific taxation calculated on this indicator, in addition to other taxes related to business activity that are not included in that rate.
The quarter registered 15.2 million bettors, according to data from the Betting Management System, a technological solution from the Ministry of Finance that monitors the activity of licensed operators. This figure corresponds to unique tax registrations that placed bets during the period. In total, more than 113.3 million active accounts were counted in the country, a metric that includes registrations of the same user on different platforms and profiles without recent bets.
According to the same source, men represented the majority of registered bettors, with 68.01 percent, compared to 31.99 percent for women. The age group with the most users was 31 to 40 years old, with 28.85 percent, followed by 25 to 30 years old, with 22.08 percent, and up to 24 years old, with 21.66 percent. Regarding the number of platforms used, 44.36 percent of bettors had an account with only one operator, 17.96 percent with two, 9.89 percent with three, and 27.78 percent with four or more sportsbooks.
Regarding the destination of the taxes collected on gross revenue, the main sector benefited was sports, with about 64.66 million dollars, followed by tourism, with 50.30 million, public security, with 24.42 million, education and social security, with approximately 17.96 million each, and health, with 1.79 million, according to Metrópoles.
