Lula questioned online betting and warned it could be banned
Brazil's President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, questioned the continued presence of online betting platforms in the country and suggested that the sector should demonstrate a social justification to continue operating, in a new criticism directed at an industry that was regulated under his administration. The criticisms have intensified as the presidential elections in October approach, for which the president has made questioning online gambling one of the central themes of his campaign. During an interview on August 14, he stated that if no one shows him a social reason for betting to continue, the activity should cease.
In the same intervention, the president acknowledged that any initiative aimed at restricting or eventually ending the activities of these platforms would face resistance in the National Congress, and affirmed his awareness of the existence of a so-called "betting caucus" within the Legislative Power, which he defined as an obstacle in a dispute that, he maintained, would have to be fought to prevent society from being affected by something that, in his opinion, can be controlled. These statements express a political questioning of the permanence of online betting, although they were not accompanied by the announcement of a specific measure nor by details on what regulatory changes the Government might promote, whether it would involve a modification of the current legal framework, or if there is a timeline to advance with a potential prohibition.
The president suggested that the activity should demonstrate a social contribution that justifies its permanence, but he did not specify what parameters should be used to determine this, nor what additional obligations might arise from this proposal, in a scenario that, for now, remains at the level of political discussion about the future of a sector that operates under a federal regulatory scheme. Following his remarks, various opposition voices criticized the statements, considering them opportunistic and framed within an electoral context ahead of the October elections, arguing that they sought to curry favor with sectors opposed to online betting, such as the evangelical caucus, to improve the government's image ahead of the elections. The reference to the betting caucus also anticipates a possible legislative debate should the Government advance with new restrictions on an industry that the president has already expressed his intention to suppress on other occasions.
