Mega-Sena and Lotofácil bill over US$1.2 billion in the first quarter
Brazilian official lotteries started 2026 with a solid quarter. Caixa Econômica Federal published its first-quarter balance sheet, reporting that its lottery division generated revenues of R$ 5.97 billion, equivalent to approximately US$ 1.2 billion. This figure represents an 8.4 percent growth compared to the same period in 2025 and confirms the resilience of the state-run gaming segment despite competition from the already regulated online betting market.
The balance sheet, released on May 15, also shows a 30.7 percent decrease compared to the fourth quarter of 2025. This contraction has a seasonal explanation: the end of the previous year was boosted by the traditional Mega da Virada, the special year-end draw that concentrates a very significant portion of sales volumes and distorts the immediate quarterly comparison.
Mega-Sena and Lotofácil were once again the main drivers of the quarter. Together, these two modalities contributed almost 75 percent of Caixa Loterias' total revenues. Mega-Sena accounted for nearly 40 percent of the total, with a 30.3 percent year-on-year growth, while Lotofácil represented 35 percent of sales and grew by 2.2 percent compared to the first quarter of 2025.
The rest of the games in the portfolio also contributed volume. Quina, Lotomania, and +Milionária collectively added over R$ 1 billion (US$ 197.8 million), while the remaining modalities accumulated approximately R$ 500 million (US$ 98 million). The diversification of the portfolio allows Caixa to sustain revenues even when the accumulated jackpots of its star games enter months of lower momentum.
Beyond the commercial result, the fiscal impact is decisive. According to Caixa, 53.1 percent of the total lottery revenues are allocated to social sectors, which will allow the federal government to channel over R$ 3.2 billion (US$ 633 million) towards sports, culture, public safety, social security, education, and health. Lotteries continue to function as a key instrument for financing public policies.
For Latin America, the performance of Caixa Loterias is a constant reference. In a continent where organizations like Lotería de la Ciudad in Argentina, Lotería de Bogotá in Colombia, or Pronósticos in Mexico are discussing how to modernize their portfolios, the Brazilian case shows that traditional lotteries can continue to grow even when a strong private online sports betting sector coexists in the same market.
