Ministry of health publishes guide for gambling addiction treatment
The Government of Brazil has taken a definitive step in managing public health related to the gaming industry. The Ministry of Health officially launched this week the "Care Guide for People with Gambling-Related Problems", a technical manual designed to guide the teams of the Psychosocial Care Network (RAPS) in the diagnosis and treatment of gambling disorders.
This document is not an isolated action, but the health pillar of a tripartite strategy that includes the Centralized Self-Exclusion Platform and the creation of the Brazil Health Gambling Observatory, in an unprecedented collaboration with the Ministry of Finance.
A "Harm Reduction" Model
Unlike prohibitionist stances, the Ministry's guide advocates an approach based on harm reduction, qualified listening, and care in freedom. The protocol organizes the State's response at different levels according to the severity of the case:
- Primary Care: First contact and early detection of risk behaviors.
- Psychosocial Support Centers (CAPS): Specialized treatment for moderate to severe dependency cases.
- Emergency Services and Hospitals: Intervention in acute crises related to the emotional or financial impact of gambling.
Synergy with the Self-Exclusion Platform
One of the most innovative points for the iGaming sector is the technological interconnection. When a user requests their block on the Centralized Self-Exclusion Platform, the system not only prevents their access to sites authorized by the SPA but also automatically generates guidance for the citizen to seek support within the SUS network.
This assisted "exit door" aims to ensure that the compulsive gambler is not left helpless after the block but is reintegrated into a formal care flow.
The Brazil Health Gambling Observatory: Data for Prevention
The creation of the Brazil Health Gambling Observatory will allow, for the first time, the cross-referencing of operational data from betting houses with public health indicators. The goal is to identify population-scale risk behaviors and support new territorial regulations based on scientific evidence, improving prevention and protection of the most vulnerable groups.
From the industry's perspective, this guide represents a clear roadmap for operators' Social Responsibility policies. Knowing these protocols allows betting houses to align their customer service channels with official health services, raising the ethical standard of the Brazilian market.
