Chile seeks superintendent of casinos with an eye on online gaming
Whoever takes the helm of the Superintendencia de Casinos de Juego (SCJ) will have to write the regulatory future of Chilean gaming. The job posting itself states among its guidelines: the next superintendent must prepare and implement proposals to update the industry's governing model, incorporating trends, technologies, and sustainability criteria.
The Ministry of Finance published the call for applications on September 13, seven months after the position became vacant following Vivien Villagrán's departure. Applications will be accepted until September 28.
The desired profile is one with a supervisory career. They require a minimum of three years leading teams, either in management or as a head, within areas dedicated to supervision or regulation. Experience in control, auditing, and process analysis and modeling adds points. Intermediate English proficiency is also required.
Remuneration is defined by pay scale. The position corresponds to Grade 1 of the Remuneration Scale for Supervisory Services, with a 1 percent Public Senior Management Allowance, resulting in an average net monthly salary of CLP 9,320,000 once allowances and incentive bonuses are added.
The context awaiting the successful candidate has two opposing fronts. On one hand, a land-based industry that, according to local media, has shrunk by 20 percent in the last seven years. On the other, the surge of online casinos and sportsbooks operating without a Chilean regulatory framework, an asymmetry that permeates the entire sectoral discussion.
The SCJ is the body that authorizes and supervises gaming casinos in Chile, both those operating under licenses granted through public tenders and municipal establishments. Its legal scope stops at land-based activity, and that boundary is precisely what the Ministry of Finance has set as a task in the job profile.
