Chile: Law Bans Footballers From Promoting Betting Platforms
The Executive Branch of Chile has decided to grant urgent status to the processing of a key bill that seeks to prevent professional soccer players from acting as advertising faces or sponsors for virtual sportsbooks. This initiative, which has found broad support in the Sports Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, emerges as a necessary response to mitigate the risks associated with conflicts of interest and lack of transparency in official competitions. The proponents of the text, originally presented in December 2023, insist that the central objective is to protect the credibility of national soccer against the growing influence of gambling operators.
Deputies Marco Sulantay and Hotuiti Teao have led this legislative proposal under the premise that it is ethically questionable for active athletes to promote platforms on which they themselves generate betting results. For the parliamentarians, there is an evident conflict of interest that compromises the integrity of the game and normalizes practices that could affect the judgment of fans and, especially, minors. As figures with a high degree of social representation, soccer players send a misleading signal when they associate their personal image with activities that the State seeks to regulate more strictly.
The progress of this project occurs in a complex judicial scenario, marked by a recent Supreme Court ruling that ratified the illegality of operators functioning without express authorization within Chilean territory. This ruling has served as a catalyst for the political spectrum to accelerate the creation of norms that prevent professional sports from developing in legal vacuums or directly defying justice. Legislators such as Roberto Arroyo and Patricio Briones have agreed that it is imperative to protect youth and ensure that no professional activity is supported by entities operating outside the current regulatory framework.
In addition to individual advertising restrictions, the law aims to establish solid foundations for the general oversight of betting operators. Parliamentarians warn that experience in other international markets shows that the absence of rigorous controls often leads to serious problems such as match-fixing, a threat that Chile intends to neutralize through preventive measures and constant vigilance. Although no particular cases of corruption have been pointed out, the legislator's intention is to anticipate any scenario that could contaminate the competitive essence of national soccer and tarnish the image of its protagonists.
