Concern in Chile over minors' access to online gambling
In Chile, the growing concern about minors' access to online betting platforms has captured the attention of lawmakers. Deputies Stephan Schubert and Marcia Raphael, members of the Education Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, have expressed their concern about this issue. According to a report by G5 Noticias, the Superintendence of Gambling Casinos (SCJ) has received more than 230 complaints in recent years related to the use of betting platforms by minors.
This situation has led the deputies to question the lack of detailed information from the Ministry of Education regarding these cases. In response, Schubert and Raphael have submitted a formal request seeking to know the measures implemented to prevent and address gambling addiction behaviors among young people. Schubert emphasized the need for effective actions to protect children and adolescents from the risks associated with gambling, highlighting the importance of collaboration between different government institutions and regulatory bodies to comprehensively tackle this issue.
For her part, Deputy Raphael stressed the urgency of establishing long-term policies to combat childhood gambling addiction. "We cannot allow childhood gambling addiction to continue growing. It is urgent to establish prevention and education mechanisms that promote a culture of responsibility regarding gambling," Raphael stated.
Meanwhile, the Senate Finance Commission of Chile has unanimously approved a bill aimed at regulating the gambling and online betting sector. This bill, which will now be voted on in the Upper House chamber, aims to protect the health and safety of players, generate a competitive and transparent market, and contribute to tax revenue.
The regulation also seeks to align these platforms with the currently legal gambling modalities in the country, such as the Polla Chilena de Beneficencia and gambling casinos. The approval of this law could mark a milestone in the regulation of the online betting sector in Chile, establishing a legal framework that not only protects minors but also ensures market transparency and competitiveness.
