The World Cup mobilized over 1.65 billion in bets in Colombia
Sports betting placed in Colombia during the World Cup would have transferred between 120 billion and 150 billion pesos, approximately 46.7 million dollars, in taxes and exploitation rights to the health system, according to a SuperGiros report. The contribution was driven by a total of 5.3 trillion pesos, approximately 1.652 billion dollars, wagered during the two months of the World Cup, within the framework of a legal digital industry that mobilizes close to 45 trillion pesos in the country.
Colombian regulations establish that authorized gambling operators must legally allocate 15 percent of their real operating income, meaning the gross amount wagered minus prizes paid out, to the financing of public health. Superpay, a payment processor allied with major operators, joined this capital movement. According to the report, it processed more than 4.7 million operations and mobilized 1.4 trillion pesos without latency during the tournament's peak traffic moments.
Edgar Páez, president of SuperGiros, stated that the volume of participation exceeded all projections and described the company's commitment to a reliable ecosystem, with technology conceived as an inclusion tool that allows users to monetize their winnings immediately through the connection between physical and digital channels. Internationally, it was projected that the World Cup would move more than 60 billion dollars in bets, and according to the report, Colombia followed this trend, supported by the enthusiasm of fans and the national team's performance during the competition.
During the tournament, the Superpay platform had to process deposits, withdrawals, inquiries, and prize payments in very short periods, with physical and digital channels available even when matches concentrated a high number of bets and payment requests in just a few minutes. Catalina de Los Ríos, Superpay manager, stated that moving 1.4 trillion pesos at the peak of the tournament was the ultimate test of the company's architecture, and reported that the gateway was calibrated to ensure thousands of operations per second and offer security in the flow of money, with responsiveness as a key element to sustain the activity achieved.
