DR Alert: Legitimate brands disguise illegal sites
The Directorate of Casinos and Gambling (DCJA) of the Dominican Republic has raised alarms about a sophisticated fraud scheme designed to deceive local bettors. Through an official resolution signed by its director, Claudia Álvarez Troncoso, the agency, which is part of the Ministry of Finance, warned about the proliferation of advertising schemes on social media and websites that use, without any authorization, the names, logos, and distinctive signs of operators who do hold legal licenses in the country.
This strategy of "corporate identity impersonation" is not a minor issue. According to the DCJA, fraudsters build a facade of legitimacy using recognized brands to generate user trust, but with a clear objective: to redirect traffic to clandestine platforms that have no relation whatsoever to the advertised content. This "bait and switch" maneuver poses a critical danger to the security of citizens, as these illegal websites are often the gateway for the illicit collection of personal data, financial information theft, and various forms of digital scams.
Given this situation, Director Álvarez Troncoso has emphasized the need for users to adopt a stance of "hyper-vigilance" before making any fund transfers. The regulator urges the public to perform three fundamental verifications: validate that the platform holds a current license issued by the Ministry of Finance, access only through the official channels of the operators, and, crucially, meticulously check the URL in the browser's address bar. An extra letter or a suspicious domain can be the only difference between a secure site and a cyber trap.
The warning also focuses on promotions that are "too good to be true." Excessively attractive offers are often the main driver of these deceptive campaigns designed to influence the player's emotions. Therefore, the DCJA reminds that transparency is a fundamental value of the regulated industry and encourages the community to use the complaint channels available on its official portal. With this move, the Dominican Republic reinforces its fight for market integrity, reminding that user protection begins with honest communication and strict respect for the intellectual property of those operating within the framework of the law.
