Online gambling leads ecommerce transactions in Spain

E-commerce in Spain exceeded 114.8 billion euros in 2025, with a year-on-year growth of 20.6 percent, according to a report by the National Commission for Markets and Competition (CNMC). Within this universe, the online gambling and betting sector once again ranked as the activity with the highest number of transactions in the country.

The agency's data details that, in the fourth quarter of 2025 alone, e-commerce generated 31.418 billion euros, a 22 percent increase compared to the same period of the previous year, with over 575 million operations and a year-on-year rise of 20.2 percent. In this distribution, gambling and betting accounted for 9.1 percent of the total transactions, leading the ranking by number of operations.

The leadership, however, is in the volume of operations and not in monetary value. In terms of revenue, the top spots went to travel agencies and tour operators, with 7.1 percent of earnings, followed by clothing with 7 percent, auxiliary services to financial intermediation with 5.6 percent, and air transport with 5.2 percent.

Regarding geography, the CNMC specified that 42.2 percent of the quarter's revenue corresponded to operations within Spain, while 57.8 percent came from purchases made from Spain to foreign businesses. This imbalance resulted in a deficit foreign balance of 14.742 billion euros, indicating that purchases by Spanish consumers on international platforms significantly exceeded those made by foreigners in local businesses.

In cross-border trade, gambling and betting ranked third by volume of activity, with 5.2 percent, behind clothing with 9.9 percent and auxiliary services to financial intermediation with 9.6 percent. Purchases from abroad to Spanish businesses reached 423 million euros in the quarter, a 21 percent increase from a year earlier, with 65.1 percent originating from European Union countries.

Domestically, within trade generated exclusively in Spain, gambling ranked seventh by business volume, with 5.4 percent, in a ranking led by Public Administration, hypermarkets and food stores, sports and recreational events, and automotive fuels.
