Online gambling in Spain generates 518 million in the quarter
The Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ), the regulator of the online sector in Spain, published its report for the first quarter of 2026 with gross gaming revenue (GGR) of 454.16 million euros, equivalent to approximately 518.3 million dollars. This figure represents a year-on-year increase of 13.94 percent and a decrease of 6.46 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2025.
The breakdown by vertical showed casino as the main driver, with 247.79 million euros and 54.56 percent of the total, followed by sports betting with 174.47 million and 38.42 percent, poker with 28.29 million and 6.23 percent, and bingo with 3.61 million and 0.79 percent.
Casino grew by 21.77 percent year-on-year and 2.44 percent compared to the previous quarter, with slots being a major driver, increasing by 22.68 percent in the annual comparison. Compared to the previous quarter, slots also advanced by 1.57 percent, conventional roulette by 5.77 percent, and live roulette by 4.9 percent, while blackjack fell by 1.43 percent.
Sports betting registered a year-on-year increase of 5.13 percent but a decrease of 17.21 percent compared to the previous quarter. In that period, conventional counterparty sports betting decreased by 33.62 percent and live betting increased by 3.22 percent, while other counterparty bets grew by 7.39 percent and counterparty horse racing by 33.03 percent. Poker added 10.88 percent year-on-year with a quarterly decrease of 2.91 percent, with cash games up and tournaments down, and bingo fell by 4.22 percent compared to the previous quarter and 0.43 percent against 2025.
Regarding user activity, deposits and withdrawals grew by 17.66 and 19.46 percent year-on-year. The monthly average of active gaming accounts was 1,897,181, up 4.72 percent from the previous quarter and 8.9 percent from a year ago, while new accounts averaged 185,200 per month. Of the 77 licensed operators, 61 had at least one active singular license in the quarter, distributed among 52 in casino, 44 in sports betting, nine in poker, four in bingo, and two in contests.
Marketing expenditure reached 184.75 million euros, approximately 210.9 million dollars, distributed as 91.05 million in promotions, 73.58 million in advertising, 17.44 million in affiliation, and 2.67 million in sponsorships. The total grew by 12.05 percent year-on-year, with increases of 23.22 percent in advertising and 30.28 percent in affiliates, a slight advance of 2.85 percent in promotions, and a decrease of 17.61 percent in sponsorships.
