Online gaming dominates Spanish e-commerce in 2025
The most recent CNMC report confirms a trend that has already been established in recent years: online gambling continues to be the leading sector in the number of transactions within Spanish e-commerce. Between January and March 2025, it accounted for 8.5% of all operations carried out, once again surpassing high-volume segments such as catering (7%) and passenger transport (6.8%).
In global terms, Spanish e-commerce recorded total revenue of 25.752 billion euros during the first quarter of the year, representing an 18.2% year-on-year growth. The report especially highlights the dynamism of sectors linked to tourism: travel agencies and tour operators concentrated 9.4% of total revenue, while air transport reached 6.7%.
The volume of operations also continues to rise. More than 474 million transactions were recorded, 14.9% more than in the same period of 2024. This figure evidences the boost of digital consumption in Spain, where online leisure — including gambling and betting — maintains a leading role in user behavior.
From a geographical point of view, 43.5% of revenues originated from domestic operations, while 56.5% corresponded to purchases made from Spain abroad. Foreign trade showed a negative balance of 11.237 billion euros, resulting from a higher volume of cross-border purchases than sales to other countries.
The business generated by transactions from Spain abroad reached 14.562 billion euros, 14.6% more than the previous year, and was mostly concentrated in European Union commerce (94.2%). The activities with the greatest weight in this flow were auxiliary financial services (10.1%) and clothing sales (8.7%).
Meanwhile, purchases made from abroad to Spain totaled 3.325 billion euros, with a year-on-year growth of 21.7%. More than six out of ten operations (62.7%) came from EU countries. Tourism was again the engine of these transactions: travel agencies, air transport, land transport, and hospitality represented 63.6% of the total international purchases to Spain.
At the domestic level, e-commerce within the country also grew strongly: domestic revenues rose 23.8% year-on-year, reaching 7.866 billion euros. The main drivers of internal growth were payments to public administration, taxes, and social security (7.4%), along with digital entertainment, where online gambling continues to consolidate itself as the largest generator of transactions.
Overall, the first quarter of 2025 confirms that Spain is experiencing a sustained expansion phase of e-commerce, with online gambling established as one of the most dynamic and representative activities of the new digital consumption profile.
