Spain strengthens domain control over illegal iGaming
The gambling regulator in Spain, the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ), has intensified its actions against illegal online gambling by convening a new meeting focused exclusively on the control and supervision of domain registrations. The goal is to improve early detection of unauthorized operators and strengthen coordination among public entities that monitor the digital environment, an area that the DGOJ considers a priority given the increasing sophistication of illegal platforms.
Domain control, the core of the strategy
The DGOJ emphasized that domain supervision is an essential tool for identifying unauthorized gambling websites. Many illegal operators change their addresses quickly, which makes tracking difficult and exposes users to services without guarantees.
To prevent this, the authority wants institutions to share information beforehand and react more quickly to suspicious registrations. It also plans to refine its own internal filters to detect irregularities even before these sites begin attracting users.
At the same time, the DGOJ highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration with the entities responsible for domain infrastructure in Spain, in order to reduce blind spots and prevent illegal platforms from consolidating. A more robust monitoring system, it stated, will provide the market with a more predictable and effective sanctioning framework.
Institutional coordination to limit the illegal market
The meeting included organizations involved in supervising the digital ecosystem and the Spanish online market. All reviewed current protocols and agreed to improve reporting mechanisms and the evaluation of suspicious activity.
The intention is to minimize the time an illegal website can operate before being detected and shut down. Additionally, the DGOJ plans to improve its analytical tools to expedite information exchange between administrations.
The regulator considers coordinated action key to building a more effective barrier against attempts to operate outside the law. The institutions will continue evaluating the results of these measures and adjusting the strategy as necessary.
The DGOJ announced that it will continue promoting these meetings to progressively strengthen the user protection system and ensure a safer and more controlled online gambling environment.
