Spain's online gambling sector records historic 17% growth
The online gaming industry in Spain continues its upward trend, consolidating itself as one of the fastest-growing modalities among users. According to the latest report from the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ) for the 2025 fiscal year, the state's Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) reached EUR 1,700m between January and December, representing a year-on-year increase of 16.99%.
This dynamism is also reflected in other key operational metrics: player deposits and withdrawals experienced significant increases of 21.47% and 23.79% respectively compared to the previous year.
Casino consolidates as the leading segment driven by slots
The analysis of GGR by segment reveals that casino is the main driver of the market, generating EUR 893m, which is equivalent to 52% of total revenue. This sector recorded an annual variation rate of 22.15%, primarily driven by the performance of slot machines. Since their implementation in 2015, slots have steadily gained market share, representing 69.11% of the casino segment in 2025 with an annual growth of 30.78%.
Regarding other modalities within the casino:
- Live roulette showed a year-on-year increase of 9.66%.
- Conventional roulette experienced a contraction of 13.24%.
- Blackjack registered a slight decrease of 1.21%.
Evolution of sports betting and poker
The betting segment ranked second with EUR 698.13m, capturing 41% of the total market and growing by 14.92% compared to the previous year. This advance is based on conventional sports betting, which increased by 25.82%, while live betting grew by 6.39%. In contrast, pari-mutuel horse betting and other pari-mutuel bets fell by 2.3% and 2.99% respectively.
Meanwhile, poker reported revenues of EUR 95.48m (5.61% of the market), representing a decrease of 4.60% year-on-year. This decline is mainly due to a 7.69% decrease in the tournament modality, which accounts for 71.19% of this niche. In contrast, cash poker grew by 4.02% and now accounts for 28.81% of the poker market. Other smaller segments such as bingo (EUR 13.94m) and contests suffered declines of 6.69% and 88.66% respectively.
Marketing investment and user metrics
Total marketing expenditure in 2025 reached EUR 664.4m, a figure 25.84% higher than in 2024. The commercial strategy of operators was broken down as follows:
- Promotions: EUR 347.20m, with an increase of 32.7%.
- Advertising: EUR 244.17m, growing by 19.43%.
- Affiliation: EUR 59.95m, an increase of 6.27%.
- Sponsorship: EUR 13.08m, representing an exceptional growth of 140.15%.
Finally, the active user base continues to expand. The monthly average of active accounts stood at 1,729,253, 20.39% more than the previous year, while the creation of new gaming accounts averaged 169,858 monthly registrations, reflecting an annual growth of 11.67%.
