Gibraltar grants first license for prediction markets

Gibraltar has taken a significant step forward in the evolution of the betting sector by officially authorizing the first prediction market operator in its jurisdiction. This decision, announced by the Minister for Justice, Trade, and Industry, Nigel Feetham, to Parliament, responds to a clear strategy to diversify the local ecosystem by combining traditional gaming with next-generation financial services. The licensing process was completed in record time following the Minister's participation in the Consensus Hong Kong event, underscoring the administrative agility that the Rock seeks to project to technology and Web3 companies.

The first beneficiary of this new phase is Predict Street Ltd, a firm that already appears in the territory's official register of betting intermediaries. The company has generated great anticipation by presenting itself as the official prediction market partner for the FIFA World Cup 2026, also backed by the technological support of Abu Dhabi-based blockchain company ADI Chain. This alliance suggests that the Rock not only seeks to attract business volume but also to position itself in global-scale events through cutting-edge digital infrastructures.

A Regulatory Contrast to the European Trend

Gibraltar's stance contrasts significantly with the restrictive climate prevailing in much of Europe. While nations like Germany, France, Portugal, and the Netherlands are moving towards banning platforms like Polymarket, the Rock opts for regulation as a path to integration. However, this move is not without international challenges, especially with the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC). The British regulator has been emphatic in warning that these products are considered gambling under its law and that any operator targeting the UK market from Gibraltar without a specific local license will face severe penalties.

In the global landscape, the United States remains the most developed market for these event contracts, supervised by the CFTC. However, legal fragmentation between federal regulations and state restrictions keeps the sector in constant tension, which Gibraltar aims to capitalize on by offering a safe and regulated haven. The success of this initiative will depend on whether industry giants decide to use the Rock's infrastructure as a springboard to other international markets or whether established operators in the territory decide to expand their offerings into these new predictive verticals.

"We licensed a new company operating in the prediction markets sector, processing the application in record time after my participation last month at Consensus Hong Kong," said Minister Nigel Feetham.

The opening of this early user registration by Predict Street Ltd marks the beginning of a competition that will test the coexistence between blockchain and traditional regulators. With the British market as the main destination for Gibraltarian companies, the harmonization of criteria will be fundamental to avoid a conflict of jurisdictions that overshadows this milestone in the iGaming industry.
