4 in 10 Peruvians bet on sports, spending $23 per wager
The public opinion company Activa Research presented the results of its study “X-ray of the Sports Betting Customer,” conducted in August of this year, which provides a detailed view of the behavior of bettors in Peru.
According to the report, four out of ten Peruvians, that is, 40% of the population, actively participate in the sports betting market. The average spending per bet reaches 81.8 Peruvian soles, equivalent to 23.2 US dollars. The frequency of bets varies among respondents: 4% claim to bet every day, 6% do so weekly, and 7% monthly.
Additionally, 23% of participants bet only occasionally, depending on the sporting event in question. The average spending of 81.8 soles is calculated considering significant geographical differences. In Lima, the average spending per bet rises to 104.6 soles, while in the provinces it drops to 56.4 soles. By age groups, the segment from 45 to 59 years old invests the most, with an average of 161.1 soles per bet, far surpassing those aged 30 to 44 years (71.8 soles), young people from 18 to 29 years (53.5 soles), and those over 60 years (54.1 soles).
The analysis by socioeconomic level (SEL) shows that SEL A concentrates the highest spending, with 172.8 soles per bet, followed by SEL B with 89 soles, SEL C with 67.2 soles, and SEL D with 62.4 soles. In this way, Lima men aged 45 to 59 belonging to SEL A consolidate as the most recurrent consumer segment in the sports betting market, while young people, middle sectors, and provinces represent a growing market.
Regarding operating channels, 78% of players interact with betting houses through digital platforms, divided between mobile applications (36%) and websites (42%). Only 22% of bettors prefer to attend physical locations. The study also reveals that in socioeconomic levels A and B, the use of mobile applications predominates, while in SEL C and D, the use of websites is preferred.
Regarding the timing of the bet, 41% of respondents prefer to bet before the sporting event begins, while 29% opt for live betting. 27% combine multiple events in a single bet, and 18% explore alternative markets, such as the number of cards or goal scorers.
Soccer is, by a wide margin, the favorite sport to bet on, concentrating 82% of the bets. It is followed by volleyball (14%), basketball (9%), tennis (7%), and boxing (4%). Additionally, 15% of bettors spread their money across different sports.
Among the factors that determine the choice of a betting platform, players prioritize security and trust (42%), followed by comfortable payment and withdrawal options (36%), bonuses and promotions (32%), and the highest odds (25%). Other valued aspects are the ease of use of the platform (22%), the variety of sports and events (14%), and recommendations from other players (6%).
This Activa Research study offers an accurate profile of the Peruvian bettor, highlighting the importance of digitalization, the preference for soccer, and the relevance of trust and ease of use in the choice of platforms. Likewise, it points out growth opportunities in young segments, middle sectors, and provinces, which could set the tone for the future development of the sports betting sector in the country.
