Peru blocked 36 illegal online betting platforms
Peru's Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism has intensified its offensive against illegal gambling by blocking 36 remote gaming and sports betting platforms operating in the country without authorization. The measure is part of a series of enforcement actions promoted by the General Directorate of Casino Games and Slot Machines to strengthen compliance with the current regulatory framework.
According to the agency, the blocking was carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Transport and Communications, in compliance with Law 31557, which regulates the exploitation of remote gaming and sports betting in Peruvian territory.
This operation adds to other recent actions against illegal gambling. Authorities from the ministry, the Peruvian National Police, and the Public Prosecutor's Office seized 39 slot machines operating illegally in establishments located in Ancón, Lima, Pomalca, Lambayeque, and Cataos, Piura, under Law 27153. During an inspection at another location in Ancón, authorities also confiscated a slot machine allegedly used by children and adolescents, an intervention carried out under Law 29149, which prohibits the exploitation, manufacture, assembly, import, and commercialization of such equipment intended for minors.
As a result of supervisory tasks, the ministry also ordered the closure of 14 sports betting establishments and six slot machine halls, totaling 20 establishments shut down. The ministry emphasized that these actions are part of a permanent enforcement strategy, both in-person and virtual, to combat illegal offerings and promote a regulated market, and noted that they complement the work promoted by the general directorate throughout the national territory.
Finally, the ministry reminded that, according to the Peruvian Penal Code, those who promote or participate in illegal gambling activities may face prison sentences of one to four years, in addition to other administrative sanctions, and urged citizens to report illegal establishments to help combat the activity.
