Puerto Rico projects three new casinos by 2028 and 2029
The executive director of the Puerto Rico Gaming Commission, Juan Carlos Santaella, announced that three new casinos will open in two or three years, as reported by local media outlet El Vocero. The new venues will join the 21 already operating in the territory.
According to the source, the openings will take place in Ponce and Mayagüez, while in Carolina, the reopening of the Ritz Carlton hotel casino is planned. The commission projects the completion of these works between 2028 and 2029.
Santaella told the media that the casino industry has experienced constant growth in recent years and that the venues have transformed from mere gaming spaces into entertainment centers, with activities that, he emphasized, are reflected in the numbers reported by the various establishments.
This announcement comes alongside progress in responsible gambling. The Puerto Rico Gaming Commission officially joined the National Voluntary Self-Exclusion Program, in partnership with technology company idPair, a measure that expands access to modern self-exclusion tools and strengthens the responsible gambling infrastructure in an expanding market. The program came into effect in June and offers eligible residents the opportunity to voluntarily enroll to prevent their access to gambling operators and platforms across multiple jurisdictions and modalities.
