Turkey blocks the financial system for bettors

Ziraat Bankası, VakıfBank, and Halkbank removed the "Gambling" sections from their digital platforms. Under new government guidelines, frequent transactions to betting sites will affect credit scores and could lead to customers being blacklisted.

Turkey's banking system has shifted from facilitation to absolute restriction regarding the gambling industry. The country's three main state banks, Ziraat Bankası, VakıfBank, and Halkbank, have eliminated direct payment tools linking their mobile banking apps with betting and lottery platforms, a measure aimed at complicating the immediate deposit logistics for users.

This action responds to recent warnings from President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan about the social and economic risks of digital gambling and is part of the "Action Plan to Combat Illegal Betting and Gambling in Digital Environments."

The "risk profile" as a barrier to credit

However, the deepest change is not in the app interfaces but in the risk assessment algorithms. From now on, banks will implement behavioral monitoring mechanisms that will track repeated transactions related to gambling.

Customers who frequently transfer funds to betting platforms may be classified as users with a "dependency risk." This will have direct consequences on their financial health:

Less convenience, less habit

For Turkish authorities, the key to discouraging habitual gambling, both on licensed operators and illegal platforms, is to reduce convenience. By removing the "Gambling" section from the apps, the possibility of making quick transfers without clear limits that existed until now is eliminated.

With this offensive, Turkey places "prevention within the financial system" as one of its seven priority areas, sending a clear message to the industry: the gambler's behavior is no longer a private matter but a determining factor in their ability to participate in the formal economy.
