DraftKings' Q1 2026 profitability skyrockets due to prediction markets
The American sports betting giant, DraftKings, has started 2026 with a demonstration of financial strength that marks a before and after in its operational trajectory. The company reported a 17% year-over-year increase in revenue during the first quarter, reaching $1.646 billion. However, the figure that has captured analysts' attention is the explosive 599% growth in its adjusted EBITDA, which rose from $24 million recorded in the same period of 2025 to a solid $167.9 million. These results confirm the company's successful transition from a high capital consumption stage to a consistently profitable business model and a leader in the US iGaming sector.
Despite these record figures, adjusted earnings per share (EPS) stood at $0.20, slightly below the consensus forecast of $0.22. Nevertheless, this margin is considered a notable improvement over the previous year, driven primarily by a net revenue margin of 7.8%. This growth has been possible thanks to a strategic shift towards prediction markets, a vertical that is rapidly gaining traction. CEO and co-founder, Jason Robins, emphasized that the company has exceeded its own expectations and that current profitability gives them the financial capacity needed to consolidate their competitive advantage before the end of the year.
The Bet on the Super App and the Dominance of Predictions
An analysis of the results reveals that the net revenue margin for sports betting grew from 6.4% to 7.8% annually. This advance was largely driven by a greater mix of parlay bets, which offer higher returns for the house. However, the true crown jewel for management is the DraftKings Predictions narrative. Robins explained that the combination of its "Super App," its market-making capability, and its proprietary exchange will allow the company to dominate the sports prediction sector globally.
A revealing fact shared during the call with analysts is that approximately 70% of the volume generated by the prediction market in April came from states where mobile sports betting is not yet legal. This demonstrates the effectiveness of the "Super App" strategy, allowing DraftKings to reach a huge group of sports fans who previously did not have access to its services. By managing its own exchange and performing market making internally, the company not only charges a fee but captures the entire economic dynamic of the exchange, with margins that promise to equal or exceed those of traditional betting products.
Operational Efficiency and Active User Value
Regarding user metrics, monthly unique payers (MUP) experienced a slight drop of 4%, settling at 4.2 million. This reduction is primarily attributed to the company's strategic exit from the Texas Lottery market at the end of 2025. Excluding this impact, the user base would have grown by 2%. The most positive data in this section is the average revenue per user (ARPMUP), which soared 21% to reach $131, indicating that DraftKings is managing to extract significantly more value from its existing customer base through a more diversified offering.
The company's CFO, Alan Ellingson, expressed full confidence in the long-term business model, highlighting a predictable and constantly improving cohort economy. Despite exceeding expectations in revenue and EBITDA, DraftKings shares experienced a slight drop of 1.9% after market close, possibly because management maintained its annual forecasts for 2026 unchanged, in a range of $6.5 billion to $6.9 billion in revenue. The market, accustomed to a dynamic of beating and raising forecasts, adopted a cautious stance given the management's prudence.
Strategic Diversification with Jackpocket
Looking ahead, the integration of Jackpocket, the lottery business acquired for approximately $750 million in 2024, remains a cornerstone for DraftKings' diversification. Management envisions Jackpocket not only as an EBITDA generator but also as a powerful low-cost customer acquisition engine, acting as a funnel to attract high-value players to its sports betting and online casino products.
DraftKings' ability to generate significant cash flow even during months of lower activity in the US sports calendar reinforces its market position. With an increasingly efficient cost structure and aggressive expansion into adjacent verticals, the company appears to be optimally positioned to reach the upper end of its EBITDA guidance for the close of 2026.
