Google Play: no ads for "sweepstake casinos", new child protection

Google Play: no ads for "sweepstake casinos", new child protection

Google has decided to toughen its stance on content related to gambling and real rewards, adjusting both its advertising policies and its publishing rules on the Play Store.

On October 28, 2025, the company updated its global Advertising Policy for Games and Gambling. With this policy, Google removes the possibility for “sweepstake” casinos — those operating with dual currency systems, such as Gold Coins for playing and Sweeps Coins redeemable for prizes — to continue being considered social games, a category that until now allowed lighter advertising certification.

From this update onward, these products will be treated under the “real money online gambling” policy, which requires regulatory licenses, specific certifications by country, and mandatory responsible gaming messages.

For the North American market, where “sweepstakes casinos” operate in a legal gray area, the reclassification could make them ineligible for advertising on Google Ads unless they have a formal gambling license. Additionally, affiliates and media promoting these types of products must comply with the same advertising rules as licensed operators, under risk of suspension of their advertising accounts.

Play Store tightens age controls on apps with games or gambling

Two days later, on October 30, 2025, Google published a second update, this time aimed at Android developers through its Play Console.

The new Content and Features with Age Restriction Policy introduces specific obligations to block minors’ access to applications that include gambling functions, contests, or social interaction with monetary potential.

“To help protect children, apps with matchmaking, dating, or real money gaming features must use Play Console tools to block minors’ access.”

Developers have until the end of November to implement the new age verification systems, before the measure fully takes effect on January 28, 2026. Apps that do not meet the requirements may be suspended or removed from Google Play.

A sign of global tightening in online gambling control

These two measures reflect a coordinated strategy by Google to align its advertising and app distribution policies with international regulatory standards, which require valid licenses, effective age controls, and commitment to responsible gaming.

Industry analysts interpret the updates as a new turning point: “sweepstake” game operators lose their “free-to-play” advertising route, while app developers must demonstrate active compliance with child protection policies.

With these decisions, Google consolidates its position as one of the strictest technology platforms regarding online gambling, drawing a clear line between digital entertainment and activities with financial risk or social impact.
