Meta develops Arena as a prediction market platform
Meta, Facebook's parent company, is in advanced development of Arena, a prediction market application that would compete directly against platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi. According to reports from the New York Times, the project is experimental but marked as a top priority within the organization, signaling a serious bet on an expanding financial category.
Arena would allow users to make predictions on future events: election outcomes, sports performances, entertainment events, and geopolitical matters. Unlike Polymarket (cryptocurrency-based) or Kalshi (regulated fiat money), Arena would initially operate with a virtual points system similar to video games. Meta does not rule out monetization with real money in the future, depending on regulatory evolution.
The project represents a rebirth of a previous Meta initiative. In 2020, it launched Forecast, a similar prediction platform that was discontinued. Now, Meta is restarting with previous learnings and a very different context: global prediction markets reached $5 billion in volume during the 2026 World Cup, and regulators in major jurisdictions are still debating whether they are gambling or legitimate financial instruments.
Meta's entry is a game-changer due to its scale. Meta controls over 3 billion Facebook and Instagram users. If Arena is integrated or promoted on these platforms, it could capture a massive audience in record time. Polymarket grew without mainstream promotion; with Meta's distribution, prediction markets could achieve penetration comparable to traditional financial apps.
For Latin America, the news accelerates the consolidation of the sector. Kalshi already operates in Argentina as a regulated broker. Polymarket has users throughout the region. Meta will add layers of legitimacy and interface convenience. Local regulators who are still hesitant about prediction markets will face pressure: should they regulate a category that Meta validates or block a service from the largest social media company? The scenario favors the expansion of these products in LatAm during 2026-2027.
