NBA adds prediction markets to its prevention campaign

The NBA and WNBA are preparing a responsible gambling campaign that will direct fans to educational material about the financial risks of placing money on sports outcomes. The launch comes ahead of the season start and brings a definition worth noting: the league reminds fans that betting on basketball at a sportsbook, just like operating in prediction markets, carries risks, and that these are activities to be done for entertainment and not to generate income.
The work is being done in conjunction with the National Council on Problem Gambling, and the advertising will be on social media and traditional television during the boreal autumn. The central message of the campaign avoids the realm of skill; what it posits is that, no matter how much someone knows about basketball, money is still at stake.
Scott Kaufman-Ross, who heads media distribution and partnerships at the NBA, explained the initiative by citing changes in public habits. With the ways people engage with sports constantly evolving, he said in the statement, it's important for fans to understand the risks associated with betting money on sports outcomes. The executive added that the goal is for fans to make informed decisions, understand what they are exposing themselves to, and if they still choose to bet or operate, to do so responsibly. For the WNBA, Chief Growth Officer Colie Edison focused on the practical aspect, reaching more fans with recommendations to understand financial risks, set limits, and recognize when and where to seek support.
The materials will connect the public with educational content and resources to detect a problem and ask for help, including assistance hotlines. Derek Longmeier, who chairs the council's board of directors, added that public awareness helps prevent gambling-related harms. The creative pieces and the exact launch date will be announced later, while the league refers to ResponsiblePlay.org for information and the national service 1-800-MY-RESET, which is free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day, for anyone concerned about their gambling habits or those of someone close to them.
The detail that distinguishes this campaign from previous ones is the inclusion of prediction markets alongside sportsbooks. A professional league treating event contracts as an activity with the same financial risks as a sports bet is a de facto definition, and it comes as the legal discussion in the United States continues regarding whether these markets are financial instruments regulated by the futures authority or bets subject to state gambling laws. The league does not get involved in that jurisdictional dispute, but by including them in the same preventive message, it takes a stance on the user experience, which is where the legal distinction becomes imperceptible. For the rest of the region, this information has precedent value, because several Latin American regulators have not yet defined how to treat these platforms and often look first at what U.S. leagues and regulators are doing.
