Polymarket rocked by insider trading on Iran-US truce bets

The prediction market Polymarket is in the eye of the storm after suspicious financial movements linked to a contract on the cessation of hostilities between Iran and the United States were revealed. According to Bloomberg data, this specific market moved over $170 million, establishing itself as one of the most significant geopolitical milestones in the recent history of the digital betting sector. However, the financial success of a small group of users has raised integrity alarms, as analysis firms like Lookonchain detected profits of more than $480,000 in newly created anonymous accounts.

Meanwhile, the firm Bubblemaps SA identified additional operations that generated profits exceeding $560,000, carried out by profiles that curiously had anticipated previous attacks in the region. Although the identity of these operators remains anonymous, their track record of successes suggests possible access to confidential data or non-public government information. This situation is not an isolated incident, as a joint study by Columbia Law School and the University of Haifa had already warned about transaction patterns consistent with insider trading that would have generated nearly $143 million in the last two years.

The resolution of this particular contract has generated a bitter dispute among participants. While some investors argue that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi's statements about the suspension of defensive operations validate the truce, others maintain that there is no formal ceasefire to close the market. On decentralized platforms like Polymarket, the final decision rests with UMA cryptocurrency holders through a system of voting and public debate, a methodology that has shown inconsistencies in resolving similar contracts contradictorily.

The sector's growth is dizzying, with Polymarket reaching 45.3 million visits in March, representing a 400 percent increase compared to the previous year. Its competitor Kalshi has also shown remarkable evolution, achieving 13 million visits in the same period. Globally, the volume of prediction markets has grown from $100 million to over $3 billion in just twelve months, indicating a decisive stage for the industry.

Despite transactions being recorded on the blockchain, the ability to operate with multiple accounts without identity verification processes remains the platform's main Achilles' heel. Although both Polymarket and Kalshi have begun partnering with external monitoring firms to improve their oversight, the combination of anonymity, disputes in contract resolution, and massive money volumes poses a regulatory challenge that could define the future of betting on real-world events.
