Twitch enables betting ads and marks a shift in its advertising policy
Twitch began displaying ads for betting platforms within its streaming ecosystem, a decision that introduces a significant change from the restrictive stance the company had adopted regarding gambling-related content since 2022.
Unlike direct agreements between brands and content creators, the new strategy is based on advertising managed centrally by the platform itself. The ads appear integrated into the broadcasts, similar to other common commercial formats, without direct intervention from the streamers.
This move reduces the gap that historically separated Twitch from other platforms like Kick, which from its launch incorporated gambling and betting as part of its offering, also backed by the operator Stake. For years, Twitch had reinforced its positioning as a more restrictive environment focused on protecting young audiences, especially after tightening its rules on gambling content.
Community Reactions and Context of the Change
The decision did not go unnoticed among creators and viewers. One of the platform’s most well-known figures, streamer Asmongold, publicly expressed his disagreement during a broadcast, reflecting the discontent of part of the community that sees the change as a step backward in the platform’s standards.
In 2022, Twitch had established a policy prohibiting the streaming of gambling games, aiming to limit exposure to this type of content. However, the current economic landscape of streaming seems to have accelerated a review of that stance. The overall decline in advertising revenue has pressured platforms to explore new monetization sources, and the betting sector presents itself as one of the advertisers with the greatest investment capacity.
First Signs of Flexibility
The shift is not entirely unexpected. Last November, Twitch allowed Rollbit sponsorship at the StarLadder Budapest Major for CS2, a decision that had already sparked debate within the community. At that time, the company maintained that the agreement did not violate its rules, although it was interpreted as a sign of openness toward the gambling sector.
The new advertising approach confirms this trend and raises questions about the future of Twitch’s content policies. While the platform seeks to sustain its business model in a complex advertising context, the challenge will be to balance monetization with concerns related to responsibility and user protection.
