YouTube will open its Masthead to certified casino ads

Youtube Masthead Ads

YouTube's most expensive advertising space is opening up to online casinos. Starting October 21, 2026, Google will allow certified online gambling operators to purchase the Masthead, the video that tops the homepage, with expanded eligibility that extends beyond sports betting to include other modalities.

There are two entry conditions, one of which is specific to Google. The operator needs the certificate required by the company's gambling and betting policy and, in addition, must comply with applicable legislation, regional licensing requirements, and age limits. The updated version of this policy excludes advertisers who are not subject to a state or national registration requirement for gambling activities. Google has not yet specified which markets are included in the expansion.

This change comes on top of a certification system that the company had already tightened. On September 14, it extended to every category of its gambling policy the control over whether the advertiser is in good standing, something it had been applying in some markets since March 2026. Advertisers must obtain and maintain certification before publishing; accounts that fail the check may be prevented from advertising, and already granted certificates may be revoked.

Supervision has also moved up a level in the chain. The update affected administrator accounts, which are structures used by an agency or third party to manage multiple advertiser accounts. It established that any account accumulating repeated certificate revocations, or whose managed accounts are repeatedly flagged for violations while using it, will lose the ability to request a new one and may have existing ones revoked.

In parallel, the company closed another door. Since August 1, it has banned all browser extensions from the Chrome Web Store that facilitate or promote real-money prediction markets. This decision affects extensions linked to platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket, which can display live contract prices, send alerts, or simplify order placement while the user browses. Simulated products without cash prizes can remain available, provided they clarify that no real money is won.

The two decisions point in opposite directions, and therein lies the policy. Google is opening its most visible inventory to operators who pass its own certification, while simultaneously closing access to prediction markets, which operate outside the licensing scheme the company uses as a criterion. The practical effect is that certification acts as an enabling layer above regulation, because a market can be regulated and an operator licensed, yet still be unable to purchase a Masthead without Google's seal of approval. For Latin America, the missing piece of information is the most important, because the company did not specify which markets are included in the expansion. The region combines jurisdictions with consolidated frameworks, others with newly introduced regulations, and several without any, so the criteria Google uses to draw that line will determine which Latin American operators can compete for the space and which are excluded by geography rather than compliance.
