JHSF Península buys Enjoy casino in Punta del Este for $160M

After months of intense negotiations and amidst a complex judicial reorganization process in its country of origin, the Chilean operator Enjoy has formalized the total sale of shares in Baluma S.A., the company that owns the emblematic hotel and casino in Punta del Este. The buyer is the Brazilian holding company JHSF Península, which will pay 160 million dollars to acquire the most relevant real estate and operational asset of Uruguay's main resort. This move officially closes an era that began under the Conrad brand in 1997, marking a structural shift for tourism and the economy of the Maldonado department.

The departure of the Chilean company comes after just over a decade of management, which began in 2013. During this period, Enjoy is estimated to have made a total investment exceeding 300 million dollars, a figure that, according to various financial analysts, ultimately destabilized the company's finances and motivated this strategic retreat to its assets in Chile. The sale and purchase agreement (SPA), signed on April 10, puts an end to a long period of uncertainty regarding the fate of the giant located at Parada 4 of Playa Mansa.

The entry of JHSF Península into the Uruguayan market promises a new stage of solvency and investment for a resort that boasts 292 rooms and a first-class gastronomic offering distributed across seven high-end restaurants. For the local business sector and the Maldonado community, the new owner's solidity is a fundamental guarantee, considering that the complex employs hundreds of people and functions as a nerve center for international events and conventions, thanks to its 18 halls capable of accommodating up to 5,000 guests.

The economic engine of the complex remains its casino, which features 550 slots and 75 gaming tables. This infrastructure continues to be the main attraction for regional tourism, especially for the Brazilian public, which creates a natural synergy with the new ownership group and strengthens the resort's positioning among visitors from the neighboring country. Although during the sale process, names of other significant interested parties such as the Cipriani group emerged, JHSF's offer, aligned with the demands of international bondholders, was what ultimately sealed the asset's fate. With this operation, Punta del Este prepares for a transition that seeks to enhance its luxury offerings and maintain the excellence in service that has characterized the building since its inauguration in the late 1990s.
