State casinos resumed activity after an agreement with the union
The State Casino halls in Uruguay reopened on January 5, after being closed for more than a week due to a total strike led by the National Association of State Casino Employees (Anfuce).
The strike, which had begun on December 26, was lifted following a negotiation process that, according to the union, helped unlock the conflict and achieve concrete progress on several of the demands raised. Anfuce stated that the strike responded to concerns related to labor reconversion and the advancement of online gambling regulation, aspects that, in their view, put labor, salary, and functional rights at risk.
A unionized worker described the conflict as “hard,” although he highlighted that the talks achieved significant results, including the union’s participation in the online gambling development project. He also confirmed that on December 31 a meeting was held with the Ministry of Economy and Finance, in which various points of the list of demands were analyzed.
During the conflict, Anfuce also expressed strong rejection of the management of the Casinos director, Fernando Estévez, whom they accused of lack of dialogue, unilateral decisions, and simulating collective bargaining instances. According to the union, these practices contributed to deepening the conflict and deteriorating labor relations within the organization.
According to local media, the path to resolution began when the National Directorate of Casinos agreed to resume dialogue and signed a document considered key by the parties, which enabled a consensual solution. The proposal was presented in all halls across the country and, after internal exchange stages, the workers unified their position and decided to lift the strike.
With the reopening of the halls, activity returned to normal, while the parties continue to monitor the commitments made within the framework of the agreement reached.
