Buenos Aires Deputies create online gaming problem gambling commission
In its return to legislative activity this Tuesday, February 24, the Chamber of Deputies of the province of Buenos Aires has defined a new work scheme to address the issue of gambling. After two months of recess, the body decided to move forward with the formation of a specific Gambling Addiction Commission, a measure that postpones the immediate debate of individual projects in the chamber to prioritize the creation of a unified file.
This new commission will have the critical task of combining the proposals of all political blocs, placing special emphasis on the effective prohibition of online gambling for minors and the control of advertising aimed at vulnerable sectors.
The decision to institutionalize this debate space arises after pressure from various opposition sectors that demanded urgent treatment of gambling regulations. With this move, the structure of the Buenos Aires Lower House is reconfigured: in a session where it was also agreed to reduce the total number of commissions from 47 to 43 to gain administrative efficiency, the Gambling Addiction Commission appears as the only new addition to the legislative scheme. The objective is to move beyond the stage of declarations of interest and requests for information that characterized the end of 2024, to give way to a parliamentary text with the force of law that comprehensively regulates digital activity.
Despite the expectation generated in recent weeks, the substantive debate on the regulation of platforms and sanctions for illegal offerings will remain under the purview of this new commission before returning to the plenary. For the iGaming sector, this decision marks a period of technical definitions where it is expected that the ruling party and the opposition will reach a consensus on a legal framework that provides real oversight tools.
The formation of this specialized body suggests that 2026 will be a year of structural reforms for the gambling market in the province, seeking to settle the parliamentary debt on a regulatory framework that adapts to the current challenges of the digital environment.
