Sports betting leads 2026 World Cup advertising in Argentina

A survey conducted by the verification portal Chequeado on 32 broadcasts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Argentina determined that online sportsbooks are the advertising category with the largest presence across the four channels broadcasting the tournament. A total of 274 advertisements were counted across Telefe, TyC Sports, DSports, and Disney+, of which 47 corresponded to betting operators, representing 17.3% of the total and surpassing sectors such as alcoholic beverages (15.4%) and fast food (13.2%).

The analysis covered eight matches per channel during the first round of the championship, differentiating between commercial advertising and promotion of each channel's own content. The brands present in the betting segment were Betano, Betsson, BetWarrior, and bplay, all with cross-platform presence. TyC Sports recorded the highest concentration of advertisements from this sector, with 25.9% of its total advertising space, while DSports was the only channel where betting did not lead in terms of appearances.

The sector's dominance is accentuated during the special hydration breaks that FIFA incorporated into this World Cup, introduced at the 23-minute mark of each half. In that slot, 28.9% of the advertisements corresponded to sportsbooks, meaning almost one out of every three ads. If alcoholic beverages and fast food categories are added, the three sectors together occupied 70% of that advertising slot, considered one of the most valuable in the market.

During half-times, the distribution was more varied, although betting maintained the first place, shared with alcoholic beverages, with 12.4% of the space for each category. Telefé, the channel with the highest total advertising volume with 87 ads surveyed, allocated 18.4% of its space to betting operators, the same percentage as fast food advertising. Disney+ assigned 20% of its advertising to betting, matching the participation of alcoholic beverages and travel insurance in its schedule.

The survey data fuels an ongoing debate in Argentina and the region about the regulation of betting advertising during massive sporting events. Countries like Spain and the United Kingdom have already implemented time and content restrictions for iGaming operator advertisements in sports broadcasts, while in several Latin American markets, the regulatory framework still does not establish specific limits. The visibility that the 2026 World Cup is giving to the sector anticipates that this debate will intensify in the coming months in Argentina and other countries in the region.
