Brazil adds IC360 to detect suspicious betting
A Brazilian athlete, coach, or referee attempting to place a bet on an online platform will encounter a technical barrier. This is the function of ProhiBet, the tool that the Ministry of Sports (MEsp) incorporated by signing a Technical Cooperation Agreement with Integrity Compliance 360 (IC360), the sports monitoring company that developed it.
The announcement was made on Wednesday the 16th, and the agreement extends for two years. Its stated objective is to expand the technological arsenal with which the Brazilian State seeks to anticipate match-fixing in the country's competitions.
The agreement has three pillars. The first is preventive and involves precisely this list of individuals prohibited from betting, which includes athletes, technical staff, referees, and other sports professionals. For the blocking to work, the agreement enables market monitoring with tokenized identifiers and API integrations, in order to cross-reference who is registered with sportsbooks against who appears in ProhiBet without exposing personal data in the process.
The second is market surveillance. The ministry adds the use of the Integrity Monitoring platform offered by the company, which is responsible for tracking how odds, lines, and markets behave and for triggering automatic alerts when something moves outside of what is predictable. Each case that arises through this channel will be forwarded to the MEsp, which will decide what to do with it.
The third is training and intelligence. The agreement includes the training of ministry personnel and commits the company to deliver quarterly reports on how the fight against match manipulation is evolving internationally.
Brazil enters into this agreement after several episodes of match manipulation that reached sports and criminal justice in recent years, and with a legal framework that prohibits those directly involved in competitions from betting. The Ministry of Sports has been playing an increasing role in the sports integrity agenda, in parallel with the work of the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting, which is the body that licenses and supervises fixed-odds operators.
